The Jerry Book isn’t only for fans of Jerry Garcia’s banjo playing with Old & In The Way. It’s also a master class in Scruggs style backup playing.
I’ve spent countless hours transcribing Jerry’s banjo playing and this book is the culmination of those efforts.
As you can see from the contents page, the book includes all of the songs from the original Old & In The Way album as well as Old & In The Way Breakdown from the bootleg: The Boarding House, San Francisco, CA. 7/23/73

The Christmas Song
(Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)
Here is my arrangement to a Christmas classic, played as closely to the Nat King Cole version as I could get.
The tab is free for all. It includes the banjo melody and chords along with the guitar chord chart and bass line.
Merry Christmas,
Sean
Bill Monroe’s tune Big Mon is a staple among Bluegrass jam sessions.
This video plays the melody twice. Once at the beginning and once at the end. In between there are four choruses for you to jam over on any instrument you like.
This song is usually played quite fast but this slow jam is about 50% slower than the usual tempo.

This is a must know chromatic lick from the 70’s.
Here’s a simple lick that runs up a G scale with a few embellishments.
This blues lick is reminiscent of what you might hear from an electric guitar. It’s closed position so you can play it in any key very easily.
This lick makes for a good exercise in playing double-stops up and down the neck in 6ths. It’s demonstrated in the key of G but can easily be transposed into other keys. The variations are limitless.
