This tune is a lot of fun to play backup on due to the arbitrary nature of the accompanying chords. The whole first page of this arrangement is an example of the kind of rolling backup that Scruggs used on Fiddle & Banjo tunes that he played with long time fiddler, Paul Warren.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Another timeless melody that Earl makes his own. This one is trickier to play than it sounds and offers some insightful left-hand patterns and positions.

This song is often the first tune folks learn in D tuning. It’s fairly simple, but has some really cool licks and is a great jam tune to stretch out on for a while.

Pike County Breakdown – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
One of the greatest jam tunes ever. Some players like to add F and C chords to the accompaniment but I’ve kept the traditional two-chord approach here. As for the single-string lick, I use my thumb and index but rumor has it Earl used a forward roll. Thumb and middle is another option as well.
