Pike County Breakdown – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
One of the greatest jam tunes ever. Some players like to add F and C chords to the accompaniment but I’ve kept the traditional two-chord approach here. As for the single-string lick, I use my thumb and index but rumor has it Earl used a forward roll. Thumb and middle is another option as well.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Home Sweet Home – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
This song makes great use of the backward roll to execute a fantastic melody. No need to get fancy or play too fast on this one. This song should be savored.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
On the original Foggy Mountain Banjo album, the bass player is featured on the ending but in this arrangement I have the banjo playing the outro. One of the coolest endings ever.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Foggy Mountain Special – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
Boogie-Woogie banjo at it’s finest. This tune is an up the neck workout. The toughest part about this song is getting comfortable picking consecutive notes on a single string with the same finger. This tune should also be played with a bit of a swing to get it bouncing properly.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Foggy Mountain Chimes – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
This D-Tuner song is unique in the way that you drop the D-Tuners and then play the entire B section in D tuning before tuning back up to G. Same tuner settings as Flint Hill Special.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Foggy Mountain Breakdown – Jam-Track from The Session Book.
The accompaniment on this tune is fairly forgiving and often times the bass player and the guitarist don’t switch between the Em and G chords at the same time. I have the Em holding for three measures but feel free to hold it for two if you prefer.
Personnel:
Sean Ray – Banjo, Guitar, Bass
Brian Ray – Mandolin
Paul Kienitz – Violin
Here is a slow sample of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. There are two down-neck breaks and two up-neck breaks. After filming these I am convinced it’s often more difficult to play slow than to play fast.
