Wildwood Flower
December 16th, 2006Here is the Carter Family classic Wildwood Flower. A simple melody that lends itself well to crosspicking. If you’re unfamiliar with crosspicking it’s just a fancy word used to describe the process of simulating a banjo roll with a flatpick. In its simplest form the picking pattern generally starts with a downstroke and alternates from there. It gets a little more involved once you start branching out to multiple strings.
Just wanted to say that I really enjoy the content on your site. The videos are some of the best that I have seen. They have really given my practice time new life.
Thanks, glad to hear you’re getting something out of them.
I love the carter flamily and this has to be the best version i have heard of wildwood flower. Is there any way i could get the tablature for it? I would love to learn how to play it like in the video.
I’m with you,I would love to learn how to play this.I’m just going to watch the video over & over.If I can figure it out, I’ll tab it out,it might take a while.

Hi Sean,
Really enjoy the music, having spent years playing Hank Marvin type music, I’m trying to learn bluegrass.
Excuse my ignorance, but from the video I can see your fretting hand but not the other, are the strings played with finger picking, a pick or some combination?
Regards….Barry
Barry,
If you watch the whole video you’ll see a shot of my picking hand at the end. For this tune I use all pick with no fingers. Some people call this technique “crosspicking”.
